According to memoirs of King Sunjo(his son), King Jeongjo resembled King Yeongjo(his grandfather) even from behind, with droopy eyelids, a square-shaped mouth, a high nose, and a double chin, giving him an appearance older than his peers.

King Sunjo's own appearance seemed to inherit traits from King Jeongjo. The description mentions "a wide forehead, a high nose bridge, a square-shaped mouth, and a double chin."

Additionally, annals say King Jeongjo, inherited an obese physique like his father Crown Prince Sado.
The cause is attributed to a genetic predisposition from the king and a fondness for alcohol, which led to them being known as heavy drinkers—a widely accepted explanation.
